On October 14th, 1987, 18-month-old Jessica McClure (Nicknamed Baby Jessica by the media) fell into a well in her aunt's backyard in Midland, Texas. Local firemen and police officials immediately began a rescue effort, planning to drill a parrallel shaft to the well where Baby Jessica was trapped, and drill another horizontal tunnel to rescue her. The rescue effort took approximately 56 hours, and on October 16th, 1987, the 18-month-old was lifted out of well safely. The incident caught massive media attention nationwide, and CNN covered the rescue effort nonstop, which helped bring CNN to nationwide attention. Today, Jessica McClure has no first-hand memory of the incident, but still has a small scar on her forehead where her head rubbed against the well.
