Today in American History (March 1st, 1932): The "Lindbergh Baby" was Kidnapped from Charles Lindbergh's Home in New Jersey!

On March 1st, 1932, American aviator Charles Lindbergh's son, Charles Augustus Lindbergh Jr. was kidnapped from the Lindbergh home in East Amwell, New Jersey. The 20-month-old child was abducted from his crib on the upper floor of the Lindbergh home around 9 p.m. The abduction became a worldwide-known case, and the search for the child became highly advertised, until his corpse was found by a truck driver by the side of a nearby road on May 12th, 1932. In September 1934, German immigrant, Bruno Richard Hauptmann, was arrested and accused of the abduction and murder of the Lindbergh baby, and after a trial that lasted a little over a month in the beginning of 1935, he was found guilty and sentenced to death. Hauptmann was executed in the electric chair at the New Jersey State Prison on April 3rd, 1936, and he continued to profess his innocence until his execution.
