Today in Computer History (January 5th, 1984): Seiko Introduces the First "Smartwatch" at the January 1984 Consumer Electronics Show!

On January 5th, 1984, Seiko introduced the Data 2000 watch at the January 1984 Consumer Electronics Show. Often cited as the first true smartwatch, the watch retailed for $300 upon release, which is $700 adjusted for inflation. The Data 2000 featured an attachable keyboard, which allowed you to transform the watch into a miniature computer that allowed data input. Seiko marketed the watch to people who already owned home computers, claiming you could wear your computer on your wrist all day while you're out and about and transmit the data to your home computer at the end of the day. The watch sold well for the first few months, but after two years, the Data 2000 was already in the bargin bin, selling for 1/3 of the original selling price.
