Today in Computer History (January 7th, 2002): Apple Introduces the iMac G4!

On January 7th, 2002, Apple introduced the iMac G4 personal computer! Envisioned after the success of Apple's previous CRT-based Mac, the iMac G3, which played a huge role in saving the company from bankruptcy, the iMac G4 was one of Apple's earliest commercially-successful releases with a LCD screen. The design of the G4, which consists of a dome with an adjustable metal arm that holds the screen, was inspired by a sunflower. The computer was announced at the MacWorld San Francisco expo on January 7th, and began shipping that month. Over its lifetime, the G4 sold approximately 3.1 million units alongside the Apple eMac, and was eventually discontinued on August 31st, 2004, in favor of the iMac G5.
