Today in Computer History (January 8th, 1987): The Commodore Amiga 500 was Introduced at the 1987 Consumer Electronics Show!

On January 8th, 1987, Commodore announced the Amiga 500 personal computer at the January 1987 Consumer Electronics Show. Released in the United States in October 1987, the computer sold for a price of $699 at release, and was the first computer for the home market capable of multitasking. As well, the computer featured high-end color graphics at a time when most high-end computer systems like the IBM PC and Macintosh had limited color or were entirely monochrome. The Amiga 500 sold in the same retail outlets as the Commodore 64, and sold approximately 2.6 million units, making it the best-selling computer in the Commodore Amiga line. It was discontinued in 1992.
