On April 2nd, 1968, the Stanley Kubrick film, "2001: A Space Odyssey", premiered in Washington D.C. The film is noted for its pioneering special effects, which went on to inspire George Lucas for the "Star Wars" films. "2001" grossed $146 million on a $10.5 million budget, and won Kubrick the Academy Award for his direction of the visual effects. "2001" is also iconic due to its character, the HAL 9000, computer, which was meant to be a self-aware computer of the future. The HAL 9000 was also a direct inspiration for AUTO in the 2008 Pixar film, "WALL-E". Today, "2001: A Space Odyssey" is considered one of the most influential films of all time.
