Today in Film History (August 17th, 1986): Pixar's "Luxo Jr." Premieres at SIGGRAPH!

On August 17th, 1986, Pixar premiered their computer-animated short film, "Luxo Jr." at the SIGGRAPH conference. Written and directed by John Lasseter, the film took four and a half months to be completed. At its initial screening at SIGGRAPH, the audience had risen in applause before the end of the film. "Luxo Jr." became the first CGI film to be nominated for an Academy Award (it didn't win), and is often considered to have changed the animation industry as a whole, changing people's interpretation of computer animation. Luxo Jr. has since become the iconic mascot for Pixar Animation Studios.
