Today in Film History (August 21st, 1942): Walt Disney Studios Releases "Bambi"!
Walt Disney Studios released the iconic film, "Bambi", on August 21st, 1942. The film was loosely based on the 1923 Felix Salten novel, "Bambi, a Life in the Woods", and production was supervised by David D. Hand. In the original story, Bambi was a roe deer, a species from Europe, but in the film, Disney decided to make Bambi a mule deer from Arrowhead, California. The film was nominated for three Academy Awards, for Best Sound, Best Song, and Best Original Music Score. The film grossed $267.4 million in the box office on an $858,000 budget. In December 2011, the film was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.
