Today in Film History (February 23rd, 1940): Walt Disney's "Pinocchio" was Released to U.S. Theaters!

On February 23rd, 1940, the Walt Disney animated film, "Pinocchio", was released to U.S. theaters. The film was adapted by the book "The Adventures of Pinocchio" by Carlo Collodi, and first premiered on February 7th, 1940. Although the film became the first animated feature film to win the Academy Award, it was initially a commercial failure, due to WWII cutting off the European and Asain markets. After its 1945 rerelease, it made a profit, ultimately earning $164 million in the worldwide box office.
