On February 3rd, 1986, Pixar Animation Studios was founded as its own independent company. Pixar was originally started in 1979 as part of the Lucasfilm computer division, and was known as the Graphics Group. In 1986, the Graphics Group was spun off as its own corporation, after receiving significant funding from Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. Pixar unveiled it's first short film as an independent company - "Luxo Jr." - on August 17th, 1986 at SIGGRAPH. In January 2006, Disney announced its acquisition of Pixar, which they completed in Mat 2006. As of February 2026, Pixar has produced 29 feature films, as well as many short films. As of July 2023, its feature films have grossed over $15 billion worldwide with an average gross of $589 million per film.
