Today in Film History (July 28th, 1951): Walt Disney Releases "Alice in Wonderland" in the US!

On July 28th, 1951, the Disney animated film, "Alice in Wonderland" was released in the United States. Based on Lewis Carroll's 1865 novel "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, the film was supposed to be Disney's first animated feature film, but was scrapped in favor of "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". However, the idea for "Alice" was eventually revived in the 1940s after the major success of "Snow White". Unfortunately, though, the film was considered a box-office bomb, grossing only $2.4 million in the box office and recieved generally negative reviews from film critics. In 1974, "Alice in Wonderland" was re-released to theaters in the United States, and proved much more successful, grossing another $3.5 million, which led to home video releases, merchadising and more!
