Today in Film History (July 9th, 1982): "Tron" was Released to U.S. theaters!

On July 9th, 1982, the Steven Lisberger film, "Tron" was released to theaters across the United States. "Tron" was initially meant to be an animated film, but eventually Lisberger decided to include live-action elements with both backlit and 2D computer animation for the final product. Upon release, the film was a moderate box-office success, grossing $50 million on a $17 million production budget. "Tron" was praised by critics, and received Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design and Best Sound, but was disqualified from the Best Visual Effects category as the Academy felt that computer animation was "cheating" at the time. The success of "Tron" led to a sequel in 2010 called "Tron: Legacy", which was directed by Joesph Kosinski.
