On June 11th, 1982, the Steven Spielberg directed film, "E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial" was released in U.S. theaters! The script was originally offered to Columbia Pictures, but they rejected it after doubting its commercial potential. Universal Pictures ultimately purchased the script for $1 million, and filming began in September 1981 on a budget of $10.5 million. "E.T." originally premiered at the Cannes Film Festival on May 26, 1982. The film was highly successful in the box office, surpassing "Star Wars" to become the highest grossing film of all time, which was a record the film held for 11 years. The film became the highest-grossing film of the 1980's, bringing in $792.9 million at the box office!
