Today in Film History (June 15th, 1994): Disney's "The Lion King" Opens to U.S. Theaters!

On June 15th, 1994, Disney's "The Lion King" was released to theaters across the United States. Drawing inspiration from William Shakespeare's "Hamlet", "The Lion King" stars James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Jonathan Taylor, and more! Upon release, the film was highly praised by critics, and finished its initial theaterical run with a box office gross of $763 million, making it the highest-grossing film of 1994, as well as the second-highest-grossing film at that time behind only "Jurassic Park". It held the record for the highest-grossing animated film of all time until it was surpassed by "Finding Nemo" in 2003, but still holds the record for the highest-grossing traditionally animated film of all time, and the best-selling film on home video, selling over 55 million copies worldwide.
