Today in Film History (June 30th, 1971): "Willa Wonka & The Chocolate Factory" is Released to U.S. Theaters!

On June 30th, 1971, Mel Stuart's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory", starring Gene Wilder, was released to theaters across the United States. The film had a budget of $3 million, but only brought in $4 million in the box office during its initial theatrical run. The film introduced the song, "The Candy Man", which later became a #1 hit by Sammy Davis Jr. a few years later. The film was nominated for Academy Awards and a Golden Globe Award, but did not win either.
