Today in Film History (March 2nd, 1965): "The Sound of Music" was Released to U.S. Theaters!

On March 2nd, 1965, the Robert Wise film, "The Sound of Music", was released to U.S. theaters. The story is adapted from the story of the real Von Trapp family, from Maria Von Trapp's 1949 memoir, "The Story of the Trapp Family Singers". Starring film star Julie Andrews, the film's initial critical response was mixed, but it quickly became a major commercial success, becoming the number-one box office film of 1965. By November 1966, "The Sound of Music" had surpassed "Gone with the Wind" as the highest-grossing film of all time, grossing $286.2 million at the box office. "The Sound of Music" received five Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director, and is often considered one of the greatest and most-influential films of all time!
