Today in Film History (March 31st, 1999): "The Matrix" was Released in the United States!

On March 31st, 1999, the science fiction action film, "The Matrix" was released to theaters across the United States! Starring Keanu Reeves, Laurence Fishburne, Carrie-Annie Moss, among others, the film was directed by the Wachowskis. The film popularized terms such as "the red pill", as well as popularized a visual effect known as "bullet time". Upon release, "The Matrix" received widespread acclaim from critics, and went on to gross over $460 million on a $63 million production budget, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 1999. The film received many nominations at the 72nd Academy Awards, and is widely considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films of all time.
