Today in Film History (May 15, 1928): Mickey Mouse Makes His First Appearance in "Plane Crazy"!

On May 15, 1928, iconic cartoon characters, Mickey and Minnie Mouse made their first on-screen appearances in "Plane Crazy" - a short silent film by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks. "Plane Crazy" was given a test screening to a theater audience on May 15th, but the film failed to pick up a distributor. In late 1928, Mickey Mouse made his second appearance in "Steamboat Willie", which turned out to be a major commercial success. "Plane Crazy" had an official theatrical release on March 17th, 1929, to become the fourth film starring Mickey Mouse to be released commercially, after "Steamboat Willie", "The Gallopin' Gaucho", and "The Barn Dance".
