On May 16th, 1986, "Top Gun", was released to U.S. theaters. The film was directed by Tony Scott, and starred Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Kelly McGillis, and more! Upon release, "Top Gun" received moderate criticism from film critics. Despite this, the number of theaters showing it increased by 45% after four weeks, and overcame the initial criticism to become a box-office success! "Top Gun" went on to gross $357 million worldwide, and became the highest grossing film of 1986 both domestically and worldwide. In May 2022, a sequel, "Top Gun: Maverick" was released where Cruise and Kilmer reprised their roles.
