Today in Film History (May 18th, 2001): DreamWorks's "Shrek" Debuts in Theaters in the United States!

"That'll do, Donkey. That'll do."

On May 18th, 2001, Dreamworks's "Shrek" was released to theaters across the United States. The film stars Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, and John Lithgow, and was based on the 1990 children's book "Shrek!" by William Steig. Dreamworks took over production of the film in 1994, and originally cast SNL cast member, Chris Farley, as Shrek, but following his death in 1997, Myers was hired to replace him. The film went on to gross over $492 million in the worldwide box-office, making it the fourth-highest-grossing film of 2001. The film's success helped establish Dreamworks Animation as a real competitor to Pixar in feature film animation. Since the first film, three sequels have been released, including "Shrek 2" (2004), "Shrek the Third" (2007), and "Shrek Forever After" (2010), with a fifth film planning on release in 2026.
