Today in History (April 15, 1912): The Titanic Sinks in the North Atlantic Ocean!

Following its departure from Southampton, England, on April 10, 1912, the lookout noticed an iceberg directly ahead of the Titanic at around 11:40 P.M. on April 14, 1912, and immediately alerted the bridge. The captain ordered for the ship to be steered around the iceberg and for the engines to be reversed, but unfortunately, it was too late. The starboard of the Titanic hit the iceberg, making a series of holes in the ship. The passengers were extremely unprepared as the ship was seen as "unsinkable", and although the ship could carry 48 lifeboats, only 20 were used. The boat fully sank in the early hours of April 15, 1912. Out of the 2,224 passengers, about 1,500 died, making it the deadliest sinking of a single ship up to that time.
