Today in Internet History (February 22nd, 1999): Cartoon Network Released "Web Premiere Toons" on CartoonNetwork.com!

On February 22nd, 1999, Cartoon Network launched Web Premiere Toons on CartoonNetwork.com. Widely regarded as the first time a major television network moved to digital, the initiative was a digital extension of the "World Premiere Toons" television project, and featured web-native content that inckluded interactive cartoons that the user could control. The project debuted with the Gary Panter-designed cartoon, "Pink Donkey and the Fly", and eventually expanded to include a mix of shorts like "B. Happy and Germtown", "The Powerpuff Girls", and "The Banana Splits". Production for "Web Premiere Toons" halted by 2002. The content used the Flash media player on the computers to run, and because Flash has been discontinued, most of the "Web Premiere Toons" cartoons have been lost.
