Today in Movie History (May 25, 1977): "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" is Released in Theaters!

On May 25th, 1977, the first film in the classic "Star Wars" film series was released in theaters. The film was first released in a small number of theaters, as many believed it would flop. The audience reaction to the film was surprisingly positive, so the film enjoyed a much wider theatrical release later on. "Star Wars" brought in $410 million in the box office during its initial run, surpassing "Jaws" to become the highest grossing film in North America, until "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial"'s release in 1982. If you adjust for inflation, "Star Wars" is the second-highest-grossing film in North America, behind "Gone with the Wind", and the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. It received many awards, and is often considered one of the greatest and iconic films of all time!
