On March 23rd, 1956, Elvis Presley's debut album was released. Upon release, the album made history as the first rock and roll album to reach number one on the Billboard Top Pop Albums chart, where it stayed for ten weeks. Following RCA Victor's purchase of Elvis's contract from Sun Studios for $35,000, the album was rushed into production to capitalize on the massive success of his first single, "Heartbreak Hotel". Because Presley had only recorded two sessions for RCA at that point, the album was finished by including five previously unreleased recordings from his time at Sun Studio. The album's cover became one of the most iconic images in music history, and was later famously spoofed by The Clash on their "London Calling" album cover.
