On March 7th, 1985, the iconic charity single, "We Are the World" was released in the United States as a single. Recorded on January 28th, 1985, the song was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Ritchie, and produced by Quincy Jones. The song was meant to raise money for the 1983-1985 famine in Ethopia, which was also the reason for the 1984 charity single "Do They Know It's Christmas?" by Band Aid and the Live Aid charity concerts in July 1985. The song sold approximately 20 million physical copies, and is the eighth-best-selling single of all time. It was also the fastest-selling U.S. pop single in history at the time. "We Are the World" also peaked at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 pop chart in the United States.
