Today in Science History (June 16th, 1963): Valentina Tereshkova Became the First Woman in Space!

On June 16th, 1963, the Russian spaceflight, Vostok 6, lifted off carrying Valentina Tereshkova, who would become the first woman in space. Vostok 6 set a record for highest orbital inclination of a crewed spacecraft at 65 degrees, a record not broken until the 90 degree polar orbit of Fram2 nearly 62 years later. The Vostok 6 landing site coordinates are in Barnaul, Altai, Russia, which now houses a small park at the roadside and a statue of Tereshkova.
