On April 22, 1993, the Mosaic 1.0 web browser was released by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications. It was the first web browser to provide a graphical user interface (GUI), which is icons and visual graphics to create an easy-to-use user experience. The lead developer for Mosaic was Marc Andreesen, who went on to found Netscape, which was acquired by America Online (AOL). The final release of the Mosaic web brower came in January 1997, with the release of Mosaic 3.0.
