Today in Tech History (August 16th, 1930): Ub Iwerks Releases "Fiddlesticks", Starring Flip the Frog!

Ub Iwerks, who had previously worked with Walt Disney, released his first solo cartoon project, "Fiddlesticks", to theaters across America on August 16th, 1930. This cartoon is considered to be the first complete sound cartoon to be photographed in color. The cartoon features Iwerks' original character, Flip the Frog, as he dances for an audience at a party. The sound system used for "Fiddlesticks" was Powers Cinephone - the same system used for Walt Disney's "Steamboat Willie" cartoon two years prior in 1928. The cartoon later made a cameo appearance in Eminem's music video for his song, "The Real Slim Shady".
