On December 23rd, 1986, the Rutan Voyager touched down at Edwards Air Force Base in California, completing the first-ever nonstop, non-fueled flight around the world. This flight took 9 days, 3 minutes, and 44 seconds, and pilots Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager lived in the cockpit no larger than a phone booth, flying a plane that was essentially a "flying fuel tank". The design of the plane was drawn on a napkin during lunch in 1981 by Burt Rutan, who later designed SpaceShipOne. The plane took off weighing 9,694 pounds, including nearly 7,011 pounds of fuel, and by the time it landed, it had only 106 pounds of fuel remaining, which was roughly 1.5% of its starting load.
