Today in Tech History (December 29th, 1982): Dolby Released Surround Sound for Home Use!

On December 29th, 1982, Dolby Labs released Dolby Surround - the first commercial surround sound system for home use. The system used matrix encoding to "piggy-back" the program for rear speakers on to the signal for the left and right front speakers. The system was originally only available for VHS and LaserDisc home players.
