Today in Tech History (January 1st, 1908): The First Times Square News Years Ball Drop Occurs!

On January 1st, 1908, the first Times Square News Year Eve ball drop happened in New York City. Located at One Times Square, the ball drop has since become synonymous with New Years Eve in the United States. The event has occurred annually since 1908 (except for 1942 and 1943 due to Wartime blackouts), and is most famously covered on television during the Dick Clark’s New Year's Rockin’ Eve program. The ball has been updated four times to keep up with lighting technology, with the most recent update happening in 1999, which changed the lights to triangular panels.
