Today in Television History (April 30, 1939): The National Broadcasting Company (NBC) Begins Their Regularly Scheduled Television Service!

On April 30, 1939, NBC began their television broadcasting service in America. Founded in 1926 as a radio news station, NBC is the oldest of the "Big Three" TV channels (NBC, ABC, CBS) that dominated television in its early days. The first event broadcast on NBC television was President Franklin D. Roosevelt opening the 1939-1940 New York Worlds Fair with his opening address. This also marked the first time a U.S. president appeared on television.
FUN FACT #1: The iconic NBC chime is in the notes of "G", "E", and then "C". This is the abbreviation of The General Electric Company, which was NBC's parent company early on in its life!
FUN FACT #2: The NBC logo was changed to its iconic "Rainbow Peacock" logo in 1956 to promote their recent change to early color broadcasting.
