Today in Television History (April 4th, 1985): Max Headroom Makes His First Appearance on "Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future"!

On April 4th, 1985, Max Headroom made his first appearance in "Max Headroom: 20 Minutes into the Future". Known as the "first computer-generated TV presenter", Max was played by actor Matt Frewer, and was known for his biting commentary on a variety of topical issues, arrogant wit, and stuttering. Even though Max was advertised as "computer generated", he was actually an actor wearing prosthetic makeup, contact lenses, and a plastic moulded suit. Harsh lighting and other editing created the illusion of a CGI character. Max Headroom became a massive pop-culture icon of the 1980s, and became the global spokesperson for the ill-fated New Coke, appearing in many TV commercials with the catchphrase, "Catch the wave!"
