Today in Television History (August 1st, 1981): "MTV Music Television" Debuts on Cable Television!

On Saturday, August 1st, 1981, at 12:01 A.M., MTV launched on television with a montage of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing and first Space Shuttle Launch and the spoken words of "Ladies and Gentleman, Rock and Roll!", read by John Lack. The intro was followed by the original MTV theme song. The Space Shuttle intro ran at the top of every hour from MTV's launch to 1986's Space Shuttle Challenger disaster. The first music video played on MTV was the very fitting, "Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles. MTV devoted its program to mostly music videos for many years, which was guided by hosts known as "video jockeys" or VJs. MTV's peak for subscribers was in 2011 with 99,000,000 households.
