Today in Television History (August 5th, 1998): The American Version of "Whose Line Is It Anyway" Premieres on ABC!

Whose Line Is It Anyway, an improv game show that was successful in the UK since 1989, premiered in America on August 5th, 1998. Originally hosted by Drew Carey, the show featured four performers - Colin Mochrie, Ryan Stiles, and Wayne Brady as permanent performers. Stiles and Mochrie were prominent performers on the UK version of the show. Due to Stiles missing three episodes due to illness, Mochrie is the only performer to appear in every single episode of the US version of the show. The show was cancelled by ABC in 2003 due to low ratings. From 2005 to 2007, ABC Family aired "new" episodes, formed from previously filmed but un-aired performances. In 2013, a reboot of "Whose Line Is It Anyway" hosted by Aisha Tyler debuted, with Mochrie, Stiles, and Brady reprising their roles as permanent performers.
