On the evening of August 8th, 1974, President Nixon addressed the United States of America on live television, and spoke of his intention to become the first president in American history to resign from office. Due to impeachment proceedings underway for his involvement in the infamous Watergate Scandal, Nixon finally gave into the pressure from the public and Congress to leave the White house. Just before noon the next day, August 9th, Nixon officially ended his term as the 37th president and vice-president Gerald Ford was officially sworn in, becoming the first person to serve as both vice-president and president without ever being elected to office! Gerald Ford later pardoned Former President Nixon for all his crimes.
