Today in Television History (February 9th, 1964): The Beatles Perform on The Ed Sullivan Show for the First Time!

On February 9th, 1964, and two days after their famous arrival at JFK Airport, The Beatles performed for the first time on television in the United States on the Ed Sullivan Show. An estimated 73 million people tuned in to watch the performance. An estimated 170 million households in the United States had TV in 1964, meaning just about 60% of TV owners watched! Their performance on the Ed Sullivan Show is considered to be the beginning of the widespread "Beatlemania" craze as well as "The British Invasion". CBS saw around 50,000 ticket requests for the performance, far surpassing the 7,000 that were requested for Elvis Presley's 1957 performance. The Beatles opened with "All My Loving", as well as "Till There Was You" and "She Loves You". During the opening song, they showed each of the Beatles names under their face, including the famous "Sorry Girls! He's Married!" under John Lennon.
