Today in Television History (January 6th, 1973): "Schoolhouse Rock" Premieres on ABC-TV with "Multiplication Rock"!

"Schoolhouse Rock!" was a series of animated educational music videos which aired on Saturday mornings on television network, ABC from 1973 until 1985. The series was created by David McCall, who had previously noticed that his son could not learn his multiplication tables, but could memorize the lyrics to songs by The Rolling Stones. McCall hired a musician named Bob Dorough to write a song that would teach multiplication. This song became "Three Is a Magic Number", one of the most iconic "Schoolhouse Rock" videos. "Three Is a Magic Number" originally aired on September 2nd, 1971, although the "Schoolhouse Rock" series did not debut until January 6th, 1973. "Schoolhouse Rock" quickly became a 1970s Pop-Culture icon for children, and a total of 65 episodes were produced between 1973 and 1985, along with a revival from 1993-1996 and 2009.
