Today in Television History (July 1st, 1941): The First Legal Television Commercial Airs on Live Television!

On July 1st, 1941, at 2:30 p.m., the first official paid television advertisement aired over New York station WNBT (subsequently WNBC). Airing before a baseball game between the Brooklyn Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies, the advertisement was for Bulova watches, and displayed a WNBT test pattern modified to look like a clock with the hands showing the time. It was reported that Bulova only paid anywhere between $4.00 and $9.00 for the television commercials.
