On March 21st, 1980, the third-season finale of television series, "Dallas", titled "A House Divided", premiered on CBS. The episode famously ended with a mysterious character who was not identified shooting J.R. Ewing (played by Larry Hagman) in his office. The series did not reveal the identity of the assassin until the first episode of the fourth season aired on November 21st, 1980. "Who Shot J.R.?" became a popular question during the summer of 1980, as predictions from fans were made regarding who the shooter could be. When "Who Done It" premiered on November 21st, it became the most-watched television episode in American history, until it was surpassed by the final episode of "M*A*S*H*" in 1983.
