Today in Television History (May 20th, 1993): The Series Finale of "Cheers" Aired on NBC!

"Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name! And they're always glad you came!" - "Cheers" Theme Song, 1982

The final episode of the classic 1980's television sitcom, "Cheers" aired on NBC on this day in 1993. The episode was extensively advertised weeks before its airing, and started at 9:22 PM, instead of the normal "Cheers" airing time of 9:30 PM due to the episode being 98 minutes long. According to Nielsen, 80 million American viewers watched the finale during its initial airing. NBC had later estimated that there were 93 million viewers, which was 40% of the American population at the time. Due to these numbers, the "Cheers" finale is the 7th most watched television broadcast in America (excluding Super Bowls), and the second most watched series finale just behind "MASH".
