On May 31, 2000, CBS aired the first ever episode of the competitive reality series, "Survivor". The original season was filmed between March 13th and April 16th, 2000. Filming took place in the Borneo area in Malaysia, on the remote island of Pulau Tiga. The finale of the first season, when Richard Hatch was crowned "Sole Survivor", obtained 51.7 million viewers, the highest of the franchise! It is said that 125 million people tuned in to watch at least some part of the finale. In 2006, Richard Hatch was sentenced to 51 months in prison for refusing to pay taxes on his winnings.
