Today in Television History (November 22nd, 1987): The Infamous Max Headroom Hijacking Incident Occurred in Chicago!

On November 22nd, 1987, the infamous Max Headroom signal hijacking occurred in Chicago, Illinois. Two local Chicago television station's signals were hijacked that evening, and briefly sent a pirate broadcast of an unidentified individual wearing a Max Headroom mask. The first incident happened around 9:00 p.m. of independent TV station WGN-TV, and lasted for almost 30 seconds before engineers at WGN were able to regain control. The second incident happened two hours later on PBS member station WTTW, and was more sophisticated than the first, this time including distorted speech and occurring for 90 seconds. A criminal investigation conducted by the FCC immediately following the incident could not find the culprits, and they have still never been identified to this day.
