Today in Television History (September 12th, 1966): "The Monkees" Premieres on NBC!

On September 12th, 1966, the first episode of the television musical sitcom, "The Monkees" aired on NBC. The series follows The Monkees, who try to make a name for themselves as a rock and roll band. The series was a huge hit in the 1960s, winning two Emmy Awards in 1967, including Outstanding Comedy Series. The series ended on March 25th, 1968, at the end of its second season, but established a long afterlife through Saturday morning airings from 1969 to 1973, as well as a revival on MTV in 1986.
