On September 25th, 1970, the revolutionary musical sitcom, "The Partridge Family", premiered on ABC! Created by Bernard Slade, the sitcom was loosely based on the real-life musical family The Cowsills. The show was a big hit, and is credited for catapulting David Cassidy to global superstardom as the ultimate 1970s teen idol. The show reached its commercial peak during the 1971-1972 season, ranking as the #16 most watched show in America with an estimated audience of over 14 million households. The "box-office" for the "Partridge Family" was mostly through record stores, with their debut single, "I Think I Love You", peaking at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1970, famously outselling The Beatles' "Let It Be". The song sold over 5 million copies, earning a certified gold disc and making them one of the top-selling acts of the early '70s. The show eventually ended in 1974, after ABC moved it to Saturday nights directly opposite the #1 show in the country, "All in the Family".
