Today in Television History (September 26th, 1960): The First Televised Presidential Debate Airs on Television!

On September 26th, 1960, the first televised presidential debate in United States history occurred and was broadcast on CBS. The debate was between the two presidential nominees of the 1960 presidential election: Senator John F. Kennedy and Vice President Richard Nixon. The debate was recorded at WBBM-TV studios in Chicago, Illinois and was moderated by CBS anchor Howard K. Smith, with Sander Vanocur, Charles Warren, Stuart Novins, and Bob Fleming. During the debate, Nixon infamously started sweating under the studio lights, and his grey suit camouflaged into the set, causing his mother to call him to ask if he was sick. Nixon later blamed his poor performance on hitting his knee on a car door and being hospitalized for a staph infection. Kennedy went on to win in the 1960 election.
