On August 10th, 1932, The Lego Group was founded by Ole Kirk Christiansen in Billund, Denmark. When founded in 1932, the company sold wooden toys, but began manufacturing plastic bricks in Denmark in 1947. The modern LEGO brick that we all know today was patented in 1958. In 2015, LEGO became the world's largest toy company by revenue, with sales amounting to $2.1 billion, surpassing Mattel, which has reported sales of $1.9 billion. LEGO is also the world's largest tire manufacturer, producing over 300 million tires (although toy tires) a year. As of June 7th, 2025, an estimated 21,878 LEGO sets have been released to the public since 1997, according to Brickset.
