On February 1st, 1964, Hasbro introduced the G.I. Joe action figures to the United States. The initial doll offered represented the four branches of the U.S. armed forces. Interestingly enough, the term "action figure" was coined due to the development of G.I. Joe in 1964. Although the G.I. Joe trademark was used by Hasbro for several different toy lines, only two have been successful: the initial 12-inch line in 1964 and the 1982 line that featured vehicles and playsets. G.I. Joe made his first public appearance at the New York Toy Fair on February 9th, 1964 (the same day the Beatles appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show for the first time), one week after being launched.
