On November 21st, 2004, Nintendo released the DS (initialism for "Developers System" or "Dual Screen") in North America. The DS introduced distinctive new features to handheld video games: two LCD screens working together, a built-in microphone, and support for wireless connectivity capabilities. All DS models combined (DS, DS Lite, DSi, DSi XL) have sold approximately 154.02 million units worldwide, making it the best-selling handlheld system of all time, as well as the second best-selling video game system of all time, behind only the Sony Playstation 2. The Nintendo DS was succeeded by the 3DS in February 2011.
