✅ Microsoft Excel 1.0
🥇First Microsoft Excel Release
Released on September 30, 1985, Microsoft Excel 1.0 was a pivotal moment in the "spreadsheet wars" and a surprising milestone in Apple’s history. Originally developed under the code-name "Odyssey," Excel wasn't born on a Microsoft operating system; it was released exclusively for the Apple Macintosh. Microsoft chose the Mac because its graphical user interface (GUI) and mouse support allowed for a "point-and-click" experience that command-line rivals like Lotus 1-2-3 couldn't match. This version introduced the now-standard "pull-down menus" and the ability to use different fonts and styles within a grid, famously turning the dry world of data into something visually compelling.
Excel 1.0 was a massive "box office" success for Microsoft’s burgeoning application division, quickly becoming the "killer app" for the Macintosh. It was so superior to Microsoft’s previous spreadsheet effort, Multiplan, that it effectively neutralized the competition on the Mac platform. Because Lotus was slow to develop a GUI version of 1-2-3, Excel gained a two-year head start in the graphical world. When the first Windows version (labeled Excel 2.0) finally arrived in 1987, it was essentially a port of the Macintosh original, cementing the Mac’s legacy as the true birthplace of the modern digital spreadsheet.
